Final Teaser Trailer - Delete You

Here is the final outcome of my teaser trailer

Evaluation

I have also looked back at existing media products and compared them too mine.

On the left is a screen shot from A Cinderella Story, and also from my trailer Delete You. A close up has been used to emphasize the emotion. The composition of the shot is also very similar.

On the right are another set of stills. The top image is from 17 Again. This is a classroom scene, it was for my classroom scene to represent an American classroom.

On the left are some stills of a long shot. The long shot has also been used in High school Musical 2. Like in HSM2 Troy is leading his group of friends like Nate in my trailer.

On the right is an establishing shot from Picture This, and below from my film Delete You. Like my trailer the trailer for Picture This also begins with an establishing shot.

This set of images are from scenes played out for comedy. In both scene a character walks into a locker. A midshot is used to show the character and the locker clearly focusing in on the comedy part of the scene.

How did you use media technologies in the construction and research, planning and evaluation stages?

I have used many different technologies and different software to plan and create my products. I began with using Blogger to record and track my research and planning. Using blogger allows me put links to other Internet sites I’ve used for research and also I am able to embed videos from YouTube direct to my blog. YouTube is a great Internet recourse of video footage. Giving myself easy access to trailers online. Blogger also allows other Internet users to comment on my posts on blogger giving instant feedback, one of the aspects of web 2.0. Web 2.0 is the second generation of the internet, meaning users can interact with the internet, rather than just consume information, users can also become producers as well. Another great advantage of blogger is it’s accessibility.
I filmed my main task using a video camera. The video camera is good to use as it is small and lightweight and allows me to film easily. I also used a tripod whilst filming to hold a steady shoot. The camera records onto tape, which can be capture direct to the computer. I used Adobe Premier Pro to edit my trailer. Premier Pro is a good piece of software that allowed me to edit my video footage with ease. I was able to shorten clips, changed brightness and also slow and speed up clips. It’s also aloud me to put in my music for my trailer and my additional voice over.
To record my voice over I used Apple’s garage band. Using an additional microphone I could record the voice over straight to the computer, and adjust pitch, and cut the clips down. I could the save this as a MP3 file and open it into Premier Pro.
To complete my ancillary tasks I used Adobe Photoshop. Firstly I look my images for my film poster and magazine in the studio and took my images using a Canon EOS 350d SLR camera. Using Photoshop allows me to manipulate my images easily. For my film poster as was able to change how transparent the character Nate on the poster to give to effect of him being ‘deleted’ to coincide with my trailer. I could also add texts to the image. The process was also similar to creating my film magazine cover. I just used more text colours and fonts, and also coloured boxes for texts. Photoshop allows you build layers when creating your image to make it easy to edit a single part of it at a time. I can then save my final outcomes as JPEG’s, which I can then upload straight to blogger.

Audience feedback
It is important to get audience feedback for my media products. Audience feedback gives me realistic views direct from an audience. Audience feedback can also give points oh where and how to improve. Below are the results from a questionnaire I asked.
From my audience feedback I learned that I had met my codes and conventions fully. I had very positive feedback from my audiences making me feel I produced an good example of a teaser trailer for my genre. From this audience feedback I felt I didn't need to change anything about my trailer or my ancillary tasks.

How effective is the combination of your main product and ancillary texts?

My trailer and ancillary tasks both fit the genre and an obvious relation is shown. In my film I have used production titles which are similar colours too my film posters showing an obvious connection. My film poster is very simple and affective because of the white background, and this white background I also used on my magazine cover. The fonts used are also very similar. I used the same logo of my distribution company on my film poster as I did on my production titles in my trailer.

There is also an obvious connection between my film poster and magazine cover too. Both have the simple white background and uses basic fonts. The audience for my magazine is slightly different. A magazine, especially a film magazine would have a wider audience, but I need to be sure my target audience for my trailer would also recognize the film magazine. Using the image of one of the main characters on the front cover tells the audience this also the strap line says 'stars in Delete You' a direct reference to the film name. As a package together I feel the all work extremely well, and there is an obvious relation.

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

I have stuck with the convention of a lead female protagonist for my film. Typically in a teen film we will follow the life of a typical teenager girl. However some films like, 17 again and Bandslam follow a teenage male protagonist, but I've stuck to the typical style such as A Cinderella Story and Wild Child and follow the life of a teen girl. In my film we follow the character of Mollie Fletcher, this is clearly shown in my trailer.
The setting of my film is also very conventional of my genre. In my trailer you can see clearly one of my main setting for my film is a High School. Obviously most films of my genre are set in America therefore and American High School. I had to try and re create an American High School from my school. Luckily the architecture and interior of my school can easily be betrayed as an American High School. I made sure in as many shots as possible lockers could be seen as these are very conventional of a teen American films in a High School setting.
I've also kept to a typical plot of my genre, keeping to conventions. The basic plot involves a boy and girl, a dispute or argument of some form and all gets resolved at the end. This plot can easily been understood in my trailer.
It's also important the language used in my trailer is relevant. I looked at many films and trailers of my genre to see what language is used. Language can also depend on the rating on the film too. I looked at the BBFC guides to PG and 12a the usual rating of teen film in the UK. American teenagers are often use phrases such as ‘Oh my God’ and crude words such as ‘Douche’ seen in 17 Again. Language was also important in the humour of the trailer. Humour is a common convention in this genre, so the use of language helped portray that along with actions. For example the last clip in my trailers shows the traditional comic character at High School, stupidly saying ‘I’ve found him” whilst pointing at a poster of Nate, then he’s friend comes along and call him a ‘Douche’. I also had to look at how I would script my voiceover. I looked at many examples of trailers for this. I think my voice over is very conventional, introducing the main character at the beginning and giving some information about their life.
I have also thought about costume of my characters. It is important to represent my characters as teenagers. I looked at some characters from other films too see the common style. I wanted my audience to relate with my main character Mollie so it was important to dress her very casually, like the characters from existing media products. My male character Nate is also similar, very casually dressed, and also very cool at the same time, to show he is popular. Here is an image of my two main characters in a typical costume:

Bringing the trailer together is the choice of music. The two pieces of music I used are by artists who their listeners would also be interested in this genre of film. This automatically can give you a potential audience.
The characterization of my two main characters was really important. My characters are traditional of my genre, however I have also challenged conventions as well. In modern media texts like High School Musical, the character of Troy Bolton is very different to more traditional male jock type characters; I have chosen to go back to the traditional representation on jocks for my trailer. Troy Bolton (right) in High School Musical is the captain of the basketball team, and very popular, however he also takes part in the drama club, and his girlfriend if the clever girl from the maths and science clubs. In my film Nate, a typical jock, hanging out with his mates, playing basketball and a pretty girl on his arm, Mollie. Nate treats Mollie not well and cheats on her eventually.
Mollie is quite a naive girl much like the character of Sam in A Cinderella Story. Sam (below) is treated badly by her stepmother and sisters, and isn’t very popular at school. Sam is very traditional character you’d find I this genre. However Mollie has an inner strength and stands up to Nate by deleting him after she’s see’s him cheat. But Mollie has a good heart and knows she has to find him, making Mollie quite a modern representation of a teenage girl.
I think my ancillary tasks are very conventional. My film poster is simple, a white background, basic font and few colours, like many film posters of a romcom genre, 17 Again and Another Cinderella Story. My film magazine however was slightly more difficult to follow conventions fully. Usually film magazine covers such as Empire will have big Hollywood budget action blockbusters on the main cover and not often a teen romcom. Although an actor such as Zac Efron who appears in teen films, may be seen on a cover of a film magazine. So I used the actor who played the role as Nate as an up and coming star who may appear on the magazine. I also kept to conventions such as lots of texts, minimal images, bold fonts and big magazine title.

Film Magazine Cover

Here is my final outcome for my film magazine cover.

Film Magazine Cover Analysis

Empire Magazine
Empire, like Total Film has a bold title in a bright red. Again minimal colours are used, blue, red, yellow and white. The back appears more busy because of the dark colours, which also creates a darker look to the cover, reflecting the new Harry Potter film it features. Daniel Radcliffe is the main cover image, a close up shot of him in Harry Potter costume, the iamge is slightly placed to the right of the cover, which the text along the left. Lots of text is used again, and another stills image from another film. Webiste name, issue number and price are also located by the film magazine cover.

Film Magazine Cover Analysis

Total Film Magazine
The magazine has kept to 3 colours for the cover, blue, white and red. A lot of text is used on the cover compared to images. There is one main image of Megan Fox which grabs the readers attention as it is central on the cover, a full length body shot. The magazine name is in a bold font, in block colour, Red a very bright colour. The main cover image is also overlayed over the title. Along the top are a few images of stills from oter films. There is alot of negative space on the cover. The magazine issue, price, and website are also listed by the magazien title.

My Film Poster

Here is my final film poster. I have done two slightly different posters, one with film 'reviews' and one without. I am going to get audience feedback to decide which should be my final outcome.

Recording My Voiceover

To record my voiceover for my trailer I used Garage Band by Apple. We recorded the voice over via a headset, and adjusted the pitch on Garage Band. I then exported it as a MP3 file, so I'm able to add it to my trailer.

Production So Far.... UPDATE

Since my last update of filming, I have filmed more footage. After looking through my footage so far and other existing media products I established certain shots I need to create a more realistic trailer for my genre. After discussions with my teacher it was clear my trailer was lacking comedy. I have since filmed a comic scene with I feel supports my genre better.
I have also re arranged the sequence and pace of my trailer so far, to make it quicker, snappier and a lot more fun.
My next stage is to record a voice over for my trailer. In the post below you'll see some examples, and my script for my voice over.

09/02/2010

Voice Over

Many trailers use voice overs for the trailers to tell the audience more about the plot of the film so the clips seen make sense to the viewer.

I've decided to script two voice overs for my trailer;
1. From the P.O.V of the main character Mollie, like in the trailer for Mean Girls, Lindsay Lohan narrates from the P.O.V of Cady.

2. From a narrator voicing the film, like in the trailer for Wild Child.

Mollie Voice Over

High School, it’s not so bad,

That’s me Mollie Fletcher,

I wouldn’t say I’m popular

I get good grades, good friends and best of all

My boyfriend Nate……

Until one day……………

DELETE

Voiced Over Script

In this High School Mollie Fletcher had it all

Good Grades,

Friends

And her boyfriend Nate

Until one day

Things didn’t go so well…..

And she deleted him for good

Now she’s on a mission to find Nate, and restore their relationship

Production So Far....

I have now began production of my media products including my trailer and film poster.
My filming has gone well so far, and I've started to edit my footage so far. I've continued to think about codes and conventions of my genre during filming, making sure shots and framed right and accurately, this is so I can achieve a good representation of an American High School.

I've also began to create my film poster, I've put together a layout of the poster using photoshop, and have also done a photoshot for my poster and website.
